The ‘Linguistics in MFL’ Project is co-ordinated by colleagues at the Universities of Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Newcastle and Westminster.

PROF MICHELLE SHEEHAN

Michelle Sheehan is Professor of Linguistics at Newcastle University. She specialises in comparative grammar (syntax) with a particular focus on the Romance languages, but her research interests extend to language variation and change and the philosophy of language. She is Project Lead for the Linguistics in MFL Project and Vice-chair of Language Analysis in Schools: Education and Research (LASER) and a member of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain’s Education Committee. She co-founded the Linguistics in MFL Project (with Norma Schifano) and now leads it. She tweets @MiShee54.

Dr ALICE CORR

Alice Corr is Associate Professor in Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham, where she specialises in non-standard and understudied Ibero-Romance language varieties and linguistic theory. Her wider research interests include philosophy of language, language policy, language documentation, and linguistics in education. She is co-lead for Spanish (with Norma Schifano) and coordinates the Linguistics in Schools Transatlantic Educational Network (LISTEN!) initiative. She sometimes tweets @linguafrancabhm.

Mr PETER GILLMAN

Peter Gillman was a Research Associate on the project based at University of Bristol. He is an experienced MFL teacher (currently at The Swan School in Oxford), interested in innovation in langauge teaching.

Dr ANNA HAVINGA

Anna Havinga is Senior Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at the University of Bristol. Her research is centred on historical sociolinguistics. She is particularly interested in the role of language ideologies, attitudes, and language contact in language variation and change. She has been working on (High and Low) German as well as Scots. She is co-lead for German on the Linguistics in MFL project (with Sascha Stollhans).

Dr JONATHAN KASSTAN

Jonathan Kasstan is Lecturer in French and Linguistics at the University of Westminster. He specialises in language variation and change, with a particular focus on lesser studied language varieties; his research interests are broadly anchored in quantitative sociolinguistics. He recently completed a Leverhulme Trust funded project that sought to establish universals of grammatical variation and change in language obsolescence. He sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of French Language Studies, and holds a number of committee posts, including for the Association for French Language Studies, the University Council of General and Applied Linguistics, and the Linguistics Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Dr. NORMA SCHIFANO

Norma Schifano is Lecturer in Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham, specialising in the comparative morphosyntax of the Romance languages, with a particular focus on the documentation of endangered (Italo-Greek) and heritage (Spanish) varieties, phenomena of language contact and microvariation. She co-founded the Linguistics in MFL Project and is currently co-lead for Spanish (with Alice Corr).

Mr SASCHA STOLLHANS

Sascha Stollhans is Associate Professor of Language Pedagogies at the University of Leeds, where he also runs the Centre for Excellence in Language Teaching and currently holds the role of Deputy Pro-Dean for Student Education in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. He is interested in the relationship between linguistics and language teaching methodology, and particularly researches the role of linguistic variation (dialects, colloquial language, forms of online communication etc.) in language teaching and learning.
